Welcome to Sustainable Wareham
We want to help preserve the best of Wareham and its wider communities in a more sustainable way. From Sandford to Stoborough and Ridge to Worgret, we are concentrating on projects that can be achieved in a relatively short space of time, working with local businesses, councils and residents.
Our focus
Rethinking Rubbish
We're determined to reduce the amount of household waste from Wareham that is getting sent to landfill. Find out about items that can be recycled (but are not currently collected by Dorset Council), and where to go to recycle them.
Enhancing Nature
Wareham lies next to the most biodiverse area of the UK. We want everyone to have the chance to engage with the nature around us, from guided walks to wildlife surveys to keeping an eye on a young tree. Our aim is to promote sustainable practices, including tree and hedge planting and encouraging plants which attract pollinating insects.
Sustainable Tourism
Wareham thrives on visitors to the town. The ecotourism group organises projects to ensure we encourage visitors to be more sustainable, support local businesses and be mindful of their impact on our community and environment - whilst still enjoying the beauty of Purbeck and Wareham.
Renewable Energy
We're collecting information from governments, councils and research organisations, in order to help local businesses and residents to turn good intentions into actions - so they can heat and light their homes and premises more sustainably, and make better transport choices.

Bringing a Graveyard Back to Life
Using the skills, enthusiasm & imagination of our Community, we want to transform the graveyard behind Wareham United Reformed Church (opposite Sainsbury’s) into a space that is respectful to those who are buried there, a haven for wildlife and a place where our community can enjoy a gentle stroll or some quiet contemplation over lunch.
Rethinking Rubbish in Action
As part of our drive to reduce the amount of household waste from Wareham that is getting sent to landfill, we'll be running monthly events where you can come and recycle the stuff you can’t put in your household recycling bins. De-clutter and help save the Planet!
House Martin Haven
In an exciting new development we have been awarded a grant from The Nineveh Charitable Trust to further support the colony of House Martins at Westgate Estate (opposite Purbeck School) in Wareham, which has the largest colony of House Martins in the area.
Visit Wareham for Nature and Wildlife
This project puts Wareham on the map as THE base for enthusiasts and experts to explore the unique nature and wildlife of Purbeck. Sustainable Wareham and Visit Wareham, in collaboration with many environmental and conservation organisations, have created a website "Nature and Wildlife – Visit Wareham", and have produced a leaflet called Visit Wareham for Nature and Wildlife.
