Wareham Responds – we’ve been busy!
- Had monthly meetings of the new community community group inspired by the screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing in May
- Taken the Climate and Nature Meter to 7 events – ranging from a small community gathering on Westgate Estate for ‘House Martin’s Haven’ event – to Wareham Wednesday and the Saturday market with over 700 votes recorded.
Summary of Community views
- High Impact & Deep Concern: An overwhelming majority of residents feel directly affected by recent extreme weather (~91%) and are deeply concerned about local nature loss in Purbeck (~95%).
- Preparedness Gap: While climate impact is widely felt, confidence in handling future events is low—over 81% of respondents either lack confidence or are unsure about how to prepare.
- Information Split: Knowledge level is divided; less than half (~43%) feel fully informed about climate and nature risks.
- Strong Desire for Action: There is near-unanimous agreement (~97%) that the local community should be actively involved in shaping and executing the response to these environmental challenges.
Next meeting will be Wednesday 14th October – Come along and join us in discussing:
- Where next for the Climate and Nature Meter – and how can we use the data gathered so far to influence decision makers – like the local town and parish councils. Review of our current questions – new ideas
- Community Supported Agriculture – update on progress
- Community Generated Energy – what is it and could we take it forward.
- People’s Emergency Briefing – possible screening at the Rex cinema!
- More support! Can you help us in organising future Wareham Responds events? We particularly need help with:
- website / social media design and management
- funding applications .
- community energy expertise
- All skills welcome!
