Active and Sustainable Transport

This Project looks for ways we can help residents and visitors to Wareham and the surrounding area reduce our high dependency on cars. Some of it is as simple as improving the pavements and footpaths so that walking is the natural choice for everyday local journeys. Other action is more ambitious such as supporting safe cycling through led rides.

This Project looks for ways we can help residents and visitors to Wareham and the surrounding area reduce our high dependency on cars.

Some of it is as simple as improving the pavements and footpaths so that walking is the natural choice for everyday local journeys – see Our Organisation | Living Streets.

Other action is more ambitious such as supporting safe cycling through led rides https://visitwareham.com/activity/sustran-cycle-rides-in-purbeck/  and

campaigning for better public transport links with the Purbeck Active Transport Group.

We recognise that for some people private car use is the only option so we also encourage provision of effective infrastructure for electric cars and have successfully persuaded Wareham Town Council to invest in Electric Vehicle Chargers in the town car parks.

What have we done?

Every year on or around 22 September, communities across the globe celebrate World Car Free Day, encouraging motorists to give up their cars for a day. The event highlights the numerous benefits of going car-free to citizens—including reduced air pollution and the promotion of walking and cycling in a safer environment.

So in 2023, as part of the Planet Purbeck Festival, we joined with colleagues from the Purbeck Transport Action Group to organise a programme of opportunities between 15th – 23rd September.

The activities centred around two hubs; one at Purbeck Park in Norden on the 15-17th September (with FREE PARKING on the Friday and Saturday) , and one at Burnbake campsite the following weekend on 23rd September.

See all activities here.

What’s next?

We are planning for a similar event in 2024 – and watch out for the new Jurassic Adventurer ticket being offered by City cruises, More Bus and Swanage Railway enabling you to travel by bus, bot and train all round Purbeck.
