This new project will run until summer 2027 and will aim to grow and widen support for the colony by sharing unique film from inside a nest cup as the birds pair up, lay eggs and raise their chicks; run events to celebrate the return of the birds every year from Africa; install further artificial nest cups plus create other natural features they rely on; and facilitate the involvement of the whole community in welcoming and protecting these birds.
As a first step we were officially awarded, in March 2026, House Martin Haven status by the House Martin Conservation UK & Ireland charity in recognition of the support provided by the residents for the colony, and are one of the first Havens in the country to be registered.

We are working with the estate’s residents to install more artificial nest cups; create wet mud areas for birds who want to adapt, repair or build natural nests; and spread the word that these small migratory birds desperately need our help to halt the devastating decline they have faced in recent years.
Proect History
An event in the Co-op, Wareham highlighted a good colony of house martins in the town. With enthusiastic support from residents, in February 2024 we installed 12 artificial nest cups on houses at Westgate and established a monitoring programme to record success. (See video)In February 2025 we installed a further 12 artificial House Martin nest cups on houses at Westgate, making a total of 24 to help the colony.
A celebration of house martins was held in July 2024 with an inspirational talk from Paul Stevens of House Martin Conservation UK & Ireland. Swift boxes were installed around Wareham in May 2024 and surveys to record swift boxes and active swift nests were carried out weekly by our newly established Wareham Swift, Swallow and House Martin champions. An additional 4 boxes plus 8 swift callers were installed around the town in 2025.

Other ways to help swifts, swallows and house martins include:
· Becoming a local ‘champion’ by joining our new swifts, swallows and martins group and take positive action to help support colonies in your neighbourhood.
· Plant your garden for insects; vital food for these birds.
· Let us know of any nests you see in your area next year.
