Swifts, swallows and house martins

With enthusiastic support from residents, in February 2024 we installed 12 artificial nest cups on houses at Westgate and established a monitoring programme to record success.

We aim to raise awareness about the plight of swifts, swallows and house martins and empower Wareham’s community to take action to increase local populations of these iconic summer birds. An event in the Co-op, Wareham highlighted a good colony of house martins in the town. With enthusiastic support from residents, in February 2024 we installed 12 artificial nest cups on houses at Westgate and established a monitoring programme to record success. (See video) A celebration of house martins is planned in July and a community survey event in September.

We are now looking for suitable locations in town to install swift nest boxes prior to the birds return from Africa in May. Thanks to Wareham Men’s Shed for constructing the nest boxes and to Co-op Community Fund for supporting the project.

Other ways to help swifts, swallows and house martins include:

·        Becoming a local ‘champion’ by joining our new swifts, swallows and martins group and take positive action to help support colonies in your neighbourhood.

·        Plant your garden for insects; vital food for these birds.

·        Let us know of any nests you see in your area next year.
