Full House for Climate Film Night Sparks Local Action in Wareham
A packed audience of 100 people gathered at the United Reformed Church in Wareham on Thursday 21st May for a screening of The People’s Emergency Briefing, in an event that has already begun to inspire new local action.
Hosted by Sustainable Wareham, the evening continued the group’s message to “Think Global, Act Local.” With every seat the turnout reflected a growing appetite in the community to engage with the climate and nature challenges facing both the planet and the local area.
The film, featuring leading UK scientists and experts, set the scene by outlining the scale and urgency of the climate and ecological crisis. The audience then voted on how they felt – with equal numbers feeling ‘despair’ and ‘hopeful’ – but all agreeing that we needed to act now to have any chance of averting the worst outcomes.

Local MP Vikki Slade and Dorset and Wareham Town councillors joined discussion groups exploring what the issues raised in the film means for Wareham and how we could respond in practical, achievable ways. The evening concluded with with 6 Flip Charts filled with suggestions to be taken forward in a follow up meeting – Wareham Responds – On Wednesday 10th June – 7pm – 9pm at Not Just Sundaes, South Street, Wareham
The film is being shown in multiple venues across Purbeck – and any local groups wanting to screen it can go to https://www.nebriefing.org/ to get a copy and help with the screening. The aim is to build an irresistible call for the Government to stage a televised emergency briefing, the essential first step towards the World War 2 – scale response now required.
